The Physician Assistants Act requires that every PA who practices in Tennessee have a protocol. Tennessee Code Annotated §63-19-106(a)(2) states:
The range of services that may be provided by a physician assistant shall be set forth in a written protocol, jointly developed by the supervising physician and the physician assistant. The protocol shall also contain a discussion of the problems and conditions likely to be encountered by the physician assistant and the appropriate treatment for these problems and conditions. The physician assistant shall maintain the protocol at the physician assistant’s practice location and shall make the protocol available upon request by the board of medical examiners, the committee on physician assistants or the authorized agents of the board or the committee.
Under the leadership of President Don Black, TAPA has developed a model protocol for use by Tennessee PAs. The purpose of developing this protocol is to make sure Tennessee PAs are in full compliance with their practice Act.
Many PAs have raised questions about what must be included in a protocol. The model protocol provides an example of a protocol that complies fully with the statute.
While use of TAPA’s protocol is not mandatory, it will be helpful to Tennessee PAs as they strive to comply with all facets of Tennessee law. TAPA encourages all Tennessee PAs to consider purchasing the model protocol.
